A gap left behind by one or more missing teeth can easily be filled with a fixed dental bridge. Commonly consisting of a false tooth, or pontic, situated in between two dental crowns, a bridge is made to seamlessly blend in with the rest of your smile. Our Ada, MI, dentists will make sure the supporting teeth on either side of the gap are prepared to receive crowns before moving forward with the procedure.
Having a dental bridge isn’t all about aesthetics. If it were, it’d be strictly a cosmetic procedure. While it does look nice and helps to fill in a gap that may make you feel self-conscious, it also restores function.
There are many advantages to having a dental bridge. If you’ve had oral trauma, periodontal disease, or can’t otherwise have a dental implant placed, our dentists can speak with you about how a possible bridge might prove beneficial.
Before anything else, we’ll need to reshape the adjacent, or abutment, teeth that will help support the bridge. We don’t want the crowns to look or feel bulky so it’s important to contour the teeth beforehand. Once this stage is complete, we’ll take impressions of the teeth. Next, we’ll send these impressions to a dental lab where they’ll be used to fabricate all of the bridge components. While the bridge is being constructed, our dentists will place a temporary bridge to protect exposed teeth and gums. We’ll then remove the temporary bridge and place the permanent version once it’s ready. Finally, our dentists will check your bite and the fit of the bridge. If anything feels off, please let us know and we will make alterations as needed.
