Saving teeth is the number one priority of our Ada, MI, dentists. However, sometimes the damage done to a tooth is severe enough that it’s beyond our repair. The next best option then becomes tooth extraction which fortunately, is a straightforward procedure accomplished with a local anesthetic. After your tooth is out, we can discuss replacement options to pursue once the area is fully healed.
Our dentists prefer to save your natural teeth if possible. Unfortunately, other restorative methods like tooth-colored fillings, dental crowns, or root canal treatment, won’t always suffice. Once all other procedures have been exhausted, extraction becomes the most viable option.
If after an oral examination it is clear to our dentists that tooth removal should be pursued, we’ll keep you informed every step of the way. Surprises are not our game. We want you to know all aspects of the procedure because it is your smile.
We’ll start by numbing the tooth being extracted as well as the surrounding gums. That way, you’ll feel nothing but slight pressure during the procedure. If you feel pain, please let us know and we can administer more local anesthetic. Once the area is fully numb, we’ll loosen the tooth with a tool called a dental elevator. To then remove it gently from its socket, we’ll use dental forceps. With the tooth out, our dentists will clean and disinfect the socket before placing gauze over the extraction site to stop bleeding. Clotting is normal so please leave the gauze in place until bleeding has slowed enough. We can give you aftercare instructions before you leave your visit to help ensure healing goes as it should.
Feeling nervous before a tooth extraction is expected. The good news is that our dentists in Ada, MI, have years of experience performing the procedure and you’re in good hands. Call Norman Family Dentistry today at (616) 676-9177 to request an appointment.
